Long Overdue: Holiday Letter 2010 (no laughing, please!)
This is our end-of-year letter for 2010. I'm not really a terrible procrastinator ; I just wasn't in the mood to write this type of thing until now.
Rabid Cougar Fans in Northeast Colorado: Andersen Family Update 2010
Dear Friends and Family,
Today is March 1, and this letter is long overdue. I could say that I’ve been lax about sending holiday cards in recent years, but that’d be an understatement. I certainly have plenty of excuses, but I’ll spare you the details and give you the news instead.
We continue to be blessed beyond what we deserve. We’re all healthy, happy (sometimes obnoxiously so), and busy doing things we love. Here’s an update:
Corbin turned 3 in November. He’s a roostery firecracker who resents being managed or directed in any way. He follows in Taylor’s footsteps: fiercely independent, overconfident, and incredibly strong. Corbs loves climbing everything, whether fence, refrigerator, or desk , and today as I was helping him move something outside he asked me to put him on the garage roof. He likes “shooting” people and even removes things from the oven when he hears the timer :-( . So far he's avoided major mishaps. During his quieter moments Corbin loves books; he reads them to us and remembers details and vocabulary words perfectly. He‘s very social and is happy to be in the sunbeam class at church.
Isaac is seven and a half. He likes school because of recess, art, and his friends. He has made a lot of progress this year with reading. Isaac loves soccer and is a big fan of the PBS show Arthur . He sings along with whatever’s on the radio and likes reading Junie B. Jones books. He was happy to get a yellow lab for his birthday and is now enjoying listening to Where the Red Fern Grows. Isaac recently had a great time visiting cousins in Washington and playing the Wii with them.
McKenna will turn eleven later this month. (Where have the years gone?!) She’d like an ipod for her birthday, but she’s guaranteed to get braces! (She’d be quick to tell you that it’s a Herbst appliance, not braces.) Kenna loves school; she’s in the gifted and talented program and played both volleyball and basketball this year, having success in both. Kenna is really helpful with her younger brothers and is thoughtful of others. She’s grown her hair out and it’s beautiful!
Caleb is 12 ½. Last year he became a deacon in church and joined the ranks of the Boy Scouts. Happily, he really enjoys scouts and does his church service without complaint—even when it means being designated to sit on the stand or help us clean up our oft-messy bench after church. Caleb loves all things sports, but he especially excels on the diamond, where he pitches & catches. He’s also a formidable defensive lineman, and on the hardwood he’s a post who’s capable of taking the ball down the court or shooting from downtown. (Sorry, I’ve been reading too many basketball articles lately.) He recently won a regional essay contest (the subject was Paul Revere) and he will be inducted into NJHS (Natl. Junior Honor Society) next week.
Taylor is an eighth grader; she just chose her classes for her freshman year. (Where has the time gone?) She’s looking forward to taking driver’s Ed and getting her permit in June and she’s hoping to land her first real job this summer. Taylor participates in volleyball, basketball, and track and plays the saxophone in band. She’s a good-natured gal and gives a good effort in all she does.
Jared stays busy keeping the above five fed and clothed. He fills many roles, including: Corbin’s favorite parent, Taylor’s science tutor, Havilah’s best friend, Isaac’s homework helper, Caleb’s catcher, Bishop Nielsen’s counselor, Servi-Tech’s trainer, and 226 N. Walker’s resident plumber and handyman. Last year Jared built our second bathroom, fixed up the girls’ room and made great progress with remodeling the laundry room. Last month he and the four older kids went home to Washington to visit his family and welcome his brother Matt home from his mission in New York City.
I (Havilah) stay busy keeping the above six fed and clothed. I’m enjoying the challenge of having kids of all ages and I stay involved with them by volunteering in the classroom, driving them and their friends around, and serving on school committees. I just passed the 18-month mark at Outback Fitness where I work a few hours a week as a personal trainer/manager. This year I’ve been taking a college class with the hope of eventually teaching at the local college. At church I was made a counselor in Young Women’s and I’m enjoying being there again.
As a family we enjoy everything BYU. We love watching my cousin Jimmer and have gone to all of BYU's local games; we’re gearing up for more excitement in the coming tournaments. We found time to swim and canoe together last summer, went on a camping trip in the fall, visited Denver just before Christmas, and have spent lots of hours together on bleachers cheering for one another. We’re grateful to be healthy and happy and we recognize that our greatest happiness comes because of a loving Heavenly Father who has a plan for us. We love you and appreciate the part you have played in our lives. Keep in touch!
Love,
Jared, Havilah, Taylor, Caleb, Kenna, Ike, and Corbin
