Baseball Highlights
Baseball season has been over for a few weeks, and I need to post some of my favorite pictures. But here's a synopsis of the season:
*Isaac really enjoyed playing Machine Pitch. (Isaac believes it's very important to understand that Machine Pitch is not t-ball; most kids Isaac's age play t-ball, but he was invited to move up and play machine pitch because of a shortage of players. This was a big deal.) Isaac learned a lot about baseball, such as the importance of continuing to run toward the base even if you think the ball is being caught; the importance of running fast, keeping your glove on the ground, and drinking lots of water! Isaac played especially well in the tournament. He's looking forward to playing again next summer.
*McKenna learned a lot during her first year of playing girls' softball. She played on the 9-12 year-old team, and at various times she played catcher, right field, and 2nd base. Kenna's hitting really improved as the season went on.
*For the second year, Taylor played 13-15 year old softball. She played well but didn't enjoy her season very much. Her team took 4th place in the tournament.
*Caleb's team had a great year, ending the season in 2nd place. Finishing 2nd was a big deal, since they beat SedgeCo to do it, and SedgeCo hadn't lost to anyone for several years. In fact, our team suffered a tough loss to them in last year's tourney! This year's semi-final game against SedgeCo was phenomenal. The boys played in 100-degree heat; Caleb's friend Wyatt pitched a near-perfect game; and Caleb caught incredibly well. The game was captivating! Brad, a friend of ours who has seen lots of ballgames, called it the "best little league game I've ever seen".
The final game was just as exciting. Caleb pitched, and Haxtun and Fleming were head-to-head-until the final inning, when Darian "rocked" Caleb and hit an amazing home run. (Caleb was disappointed, but pitching strikes is the pitcher's job--too bad for him that Darian was the batter.) The game was still winnable, but in our last at-bat Haxtun gave the game away. Caleb was picked off at first in a heart-wrenching, headfirst slide and Bryce was so anxious to hit that he swung at all kinds of pitches. He was the final batter, and after his last strike, he stood at home plate, burying his head in his hands and sobbing. The next few moments were heart-wrenching. (Have you ever seen 12 and 13 year-old boys cry their eyes out?) Nevertheless, they played phenomenally and left me wishing for more.
